Psychologically Informed PT: Changing Behavior Through Physical Therapy (CBPT)
Kristin R. Archer, DPT, PhD

November 1st, 2022 12-1 pm CST Join us as Kristin R. Archer, DPT, PhD, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN., presents “Psychologically Informed PT?”  Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She is also the Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research and the Director of Research for the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Vanderbilt.

Psychosocial risk factors, such as fear of movement and pain catastrophizing, have a negative influence on rehabilitation outcomes and often result in higher levels of pain and disability. A targeted approach to rehabilitation using evidence-based cognitive and behavioral strategies has the potential to address these risk factors and improve long-term patient outcomes. This one-hour course will introduce cognitive and behavioral strategies, such as graded activity, goal setting, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation training, that can be integrated into clinical care. Clinicians and researchers will learn ways to help patients manage their pain and increase their activity level, replace negative thinking with positive thoughts, and manage setbacks by recognizing high-risk situations. Motivational interviewing (MI), a behavior change communication style, will also be introduced and four core MI skills will be discussed. This session will provide a framework for addressing psychosocial risk factors and improving outcomes in patients with acute, sub-acute, and chronic musculoskeletal pain.
